A place to learn and grow together

Mupfure Self-HELP College was established in 1983 by the Zimbabwe Foundation for Education With Production (ZIMFEP) and had its first intake was in the same year.

It was in the early 80s soon after independence that the then Minister of Education and Culture, Dr Dzingai Mutumbuka requested the World University Service (WUS) to assist in the establishment of a college for demobilised ex-combatants who then had low educational qualifications and had been deprived of the opportunity to further their education because of joining the liberation struggle war.

In 1981 Mupfure College Trust was set up and it purchased Bedford South Farm in Chegutu District. In the same year, Zimbabwe Foundation for Education with Production (ZIMFEP) was launched by the government to spearhead the concept of education with production. Education with Production (EWP) was to guide the development of vocational technical training in the country.

In 1983, the minister of Education and Culture, the Trust and WUS agreed to enter into cooperation with ZIMFEP to establish Mupfure Self Help College. The construction of Mupfure Self Help College commenced in 1985. The bulk of the funding came from the Dutch Government through Humanistic Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries, Holland (HIVOS). At that time the college was registered as a secondary school under the Ministry of Education and Culture. In 1989, the college was registered with the Ministry of Higher Education interms of Part 1 of the Manpower Planning and Development Act (No.36) 1984.

The admission into the college was not conditional upon specific level of prior formal education. At the initial stage, ex-combatants from both liberation army’s were being given preferential admission including ex-refugees.

The first college intake was enrolled in 1986 with five trades on offer, namely: Agriculture, Bricklaying, Textile Technology, Cabinet Making, and Farm Motor Mechanics.

The ZIMFEP Mupfure Industrial Training College is open to all post Ó level students with or without 5 Ó levels to train in technical vocational trades. The college is now offering wide range of programs including HEXCO and trade tests.
